Women Writers of the Arab World (May 2005)

Women Writers of the Arab World – a month-long series of  public events featuring some of the most exciting Arab women writing today. These award-winning Arab writers included Raja Alem (Saudi Arabia), Suheir Hammad (Palestine/US), Choman Hardi (Iraqi Kurdistan/UK), Alia Mamdouh (Iraq/France), Somaya Ramadan (Egypt), and Ibtihal Salem (Egypt). The prominent writers were in residence at Hedgebrook, while making appearances in Seattle through readings, lectures, receptions, panel discussions and book signings.

Partner organizations who hosted the events included Arab American Community Coalition (AACC), Elliott Bay Book Company, Richard Hugo House, Seattle Arts & Lectures at Benaroya Hall, Seattle Poetry Festival, Seattle Public Library, University of Washington, World Affairs Council.

WWAW provided access to the insights of writers who might not be heard in Seattle otherwise, as well as a context for intercultural education and dialogue.
