Sample Application Questions

THIS IS A SAMPLE. PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO SUBMIT THIS AS YOUR APPLICATION.

Submissions that are sent to Hedgebrook outside of the Slideroom Portal, without the application fee and/or outside of the previously specified application dates will not be considered. This document is available at the request of writers to create greater accessibility and is not an invitation to send us unsolicited applications. We will not respond to submissions outside of the application guidelines.

The actual application may differ from this sample document.

Please note that word/character counts are not listed ahead of the applications opening, because they vary depending on the Artist Statement question, and depending on the genre you are applying to (for writing samples). You’ll have access to all of that information when applications open.

Artist Statement

1. What are the issues, ideas and subject matter(s) that inspire your creative process?

2. Briefly describe the project you’d be working on while in a Hedgebrook residency.

3. What about this particular project are you passionate about, and why is it important now? Be clear WHY you are working on the project you are wanting to bring to HB - what’s your connection to the work, what is the motivation behind exploring the subject.

4. Make a compelling case for “Why Hedgebrook?” We want to know how a Hedgebrook residency in the coming year would impact you as a storyteller, and move you forward on this project.

5. Hedgebrook mobilizes a global community of artists in support of equal voice. We actively engage with partner organizations to create opportunities for writers, especially minoritized voices, to reach a wider audience. Tell us about your current work as an advocate and/or where you are best suited to begin joining Hedgebrook's community and the movement towards equal voice (i.e. teaching, leading workshops, resources, skills, connections, mentorships, professional development, etc.).

6. Anything else you'd like us to know about you?

Artist Information

1. Primary Occupation

2. Genre You Are Applying In

Artists are encouraged to apply in the genre wherein you are most skilled. Your work sample (in the genre category you are applying) should demonstrate your ability as a writer. However, the project you propose to work on while in residence may be a different genre-type (you have the opportunity to tell us about your project in the Artist Statement section). Artists will be in mixed residence with one another. We find the diversity of genres enriches the residency experience. Please indicate the genre you are applying in, and will be judged in (please select only one).

3. Please select all genres in which you have written: (there will be a dropdown list)

4. Publications and Productions

Please list up to five publications, film/stage/music productions, and/or other arenas where any of your writing work has been seen. If the publication is self-titled, use "self-titled." If anthology, include story name. Include: Year, Title, Name of Publisher and/or Type of Publication (e.g. book, essay). DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR NAME or HYPERLINKS.

5. Awards and Recognitions

Please list up to five awards and/or recognitions you've received for your writing work. DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR NAME or HYPERLINKS.

6. Have you been a resident at other artist communities?

7. Have you applied to Hedgebrook previously?

Community Experience

1. Hedgebrook will host artists from a broadly diverse spectrum of cultures and backgrounds. The residency experience involves both solitude and community. Each artist lives in a cottage in the woods, and structures their time as they see fit, the only requirement on their time is a daily communal gathering. Please share how you function in a solitary setting, and provide an example of how you have participated in an intimate creative community.

2. What is your experience living or working in an artist's community (as described above)?

3. How have you grown or educated yourself in pursuit of your writing and/or creative life?
