Remembering Hedgebrook Alumna Gloria Steinem

The quiet corners of Hedgebrook are alive with the voices of women whose words have sparked powerful change. Among those voices is Gloria Steinem, who holds a very special place in our hearts. 

Gloria was an early resident of Hedgebrook, a frequently returning guest, an ardent champion, and heartfelt supporter and friend. She and our founder Nancy Nordhoff shared a close bond over their commitment to creating opportunities that strengthen women and give them space to become ever more themselves.

These words from Gloria hang on the wall of our Gathering Space, near a wood stove that is always ready for a fire that will nurture, heal, and empower.

Gloria's path ran parallel to the collective courage around which Hedgebrook was created. She co-founded Ms. magazine in 1972, the first major publication owned and run by women, and spent the decades after fighting for reproductive freedom, equal pay, and for women to have a seat at every table. Even in her final years, Gloria kept opening her own home for what she called "Talking Circles," gathering people to sit together and say the hard thing out loud, the same instinct that drew her back to Hedgebrook again and again. 

The Gloria we knew was so much more than an icon on a magazine cover. She was a woman who understood that change starts with people in a room, listening to each other.

We are so thankful for the opportunities we’ve had to express our gratitude to Gloria for many decades of support and partnership. Last year, we hand-delivered lavender shortbread and jam to her New York apartment, which led to a visit that lasted for hours. Hers was a generous heart, and she was especially generous with Hedgebrook.

We know that many Hedgebrook alumnae, like Gloria, have their own stories about the magic of Hedgebrook and the deep sisterhood that blossoms from time spent here. In the spirit of shared healing and community, we encourage you to share your stories about Gloria in the comments below.
