Writer in Residence Program
Hedgebrook’s Writer-in-Residence Program supports women-identified writers,18 and older, from all over the world for residencies of two or three weeks. Selected writers spend their days in solitude – writing, reading, taking walks in the woods or on nearby Double Bluff beach, then spend their evenings at The Gathering, a social time for residents to connect with each other over their freshly prepared meals. This experience is free to selected writers, including all meals and a stay ate one of our six handcrafted cottages. Applications are considered via two-round review process, where alumnae and a selection committee review writing samples and essays. Well over 1,000 writers apply each year, with 40-60 residencies awarded annually.

The Mother Tree Residency Program
The Mother Tree Residency Program is offers partially subsidized residencies. This program is an opportunity for writers and returning alumnae to plan a residency that fits their schedule, foregoing our extensive anonymous adjudication process. This program functions as an act of radical reciprocity, where fees paid by participants help subsidize and sustain Hedgebrook’s Writers in Residence program, and Mother Tree residents receive the gift of time on the land for their creative practice. In this way, the Mother Tree residents sustain our historic free-to-writers residency program and allow us to continue to support women who are authoring change.
Accepted residents of The Mother Tree Residency program are still eligible to apply to our core residency program if they are not currently an alumna.
